French

We are linguists at Kew Woods, we develop and extend our knowledge of how languages work and acquire tools that enable us to express our ideas and thoughts in another language. At Kew Woods, learning a language provides a cultural experience, which allows us to deepen our understanding of the world.

We progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics and themes – building blocks of language into more complex, fluent and authentic language. Where possible, units taught make cross curricular links so that French learning links to topics being taught in particular year groups.

The whole school joins in our annual celebration of all things French when we celebrate Bastille Day! We spend the day enjoying exciting opportunities to experience French culture and traditions. Furthermore, pupils in KS1 are invited to join our French club, where they begin their journey of enjoying a life-long love of languages and their wider curriculum values are strengthened.

The linguistic skills learnt lay foundations for further language learning, enable us to explore and utilise the structure of language independently. We leave Kew Woods as confident and able linguists, who are equipped to broaden their understanding of the world.
